Flock of Egghead and Wife
I took a break from horror films and talking points battles about Muslims in the US military to give myself a real scare, by entering the scary world of science politics: Randy Olson’s Flock of Dodos, a 2006 documentary laughing at both sides of the intelligent design-evolution legal battle. My wife finds the notion of a “God” who is responsible for all phenomena preposterous.
Olson’s condemnation of science proponents for failing to engage laypeople is a crime of which I’m equally guilty. My wife watches these documentaries kicking and screaming, but her intuitions are compelling. She does seem to be inclining toward an agnostic acceptance of fortune-tellers, though. I hold it as a goal, that I will convince her. As, in this one scene above, Olson demonstrates why science ultimately trumps a PR campaign backed with corporate and non-profit cash.
